These traditional methods of carpentry developed in France, I believe to be the most stunning and impressive of all the carpentry traditions world wide. I wish to learn and build using this technique. Vous êtes évidement loin devant moi dans ce domaine ; je n'ai pas encore touché le bois croche. En plus, les couleurs choisies dans votre image rendent la construction totale très claire. J'aimerais bien faire un échange et partager vos connaissances.

Note to non-French speakers: "bois croche" refers to curved pieces, such as the guitarde that appears in the background wallpaper of this site.Tim Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09629429704217731021noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930479055984418545.post-45353918220566180412012-04-10T05:45:45.258+02:002012-04-10T05:45:45.258+02:00Monsieur

I hope you'll excuse my presumption.

The 'lines' you mention developing perpendicular to the plan line of the hip are generally the thickness of the hip, each way. It's a technique for arranging a hip rafter around an irregular plan.

To explain: With a 45˚ plan, the centerline, the top of the backing cut, meets the corner of the plan and there is an equal amount of hip thickness on either side.

With a non-45˚ plan however, the issue arrises of how to apportion the hip on either side of the hip's plan line. If you allow for an equal amount of hip thickness on either side of the hip line, then the difference in slopes on each side of the hip will mean that the vertical measure of the plumb cut on the jack rafters would be different on each side; if the hip were centered on the line, then you would have a noticeable discrepancy in appearance between the jacks fitting on the steep side and the jacks on the slack side.

~ChrisAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14328401081765407624noreply@blogger.com
